When the A14 Orwell Bridge shuts — for wind, a crash or works — Ipswich backs up fast. Here are the official diversions, why it closes, and where to check before you leave.
This guide explains the usual playbook. For right now, use the live tracker:
Orwell Bridge live status →Always follow roadside signs and National Highways / police instructions over any website. Diversions can change for a specific incident.
National Highways typically routes traffic between J55 Copdock and J58 around Ipswich. Follow the solid triangle (eastbound) or solid circle (westbound) symbols on signs.
Source pattern from National Highways — The Orwell Bridge.
It changes through the day — especially in strong winds or after incidents. Check our live Orwell Bridge status page (and roadside signs) before you travel. Do not rely on a social-media rumour from this morning.
National Highways can impose a 40mph limit when gusts are forecast above about 50mph, and close the bridge when gusts of 60mph or more are predicted. Closures also happen for crashes, police incidents and planned maintenance.
Eastbound traffic usually leaves the A14 at J55 Copdock, follows the A1214 around Ipswich, then the A1189 and A1156 to rejoin at J58. Westbound is the reverse from J58 back to J55. Follow the official triangle/circle diversion signs — Ipswich town centre gridlocks fast.
You can, but in a full closure the signed diversion and every rat-run clog at once. Allow a lot of extra time, or delay the journey if you can.
Diversion wording matches typical National Highways signed routes used in recent A14 Orwell Bridge closures. Not an official National Highways publication.
