Blue Badge parking in Suffolk: where it's free (and where it isn't)

The badge is county-wide — the parking rules are not. Ipswich is relatively generous; East Suffolk coast car parks mostly still charge. Here's the split people actually need before a trip.

Quick answer

  • Ipswich: free dedicated Blue Badge spaces in most town-centre car parks
  • East Suffolk (Felixstowe, Southwold, Aldeburgh, Lowestoft, etc.): disabled bays exist, but standard tariff usually applies
  • Apply / renew: via Suffolk County Council / national Blue Badge scheme

Always read the tariff board and bay sign on the day. Rules and apps (e.g. RingGo) change. This is a planning guide, not a Penalty Charge Notice defence.

By council area

Ipswich Borough Council — usually free in marked bays

Dedicated free Blue Badge spaces in most town-centre car parks, plus on-street Blue Badge bays near the centre. Display the badge and clock where required.

East Suffolk — bays yes, free parking usually no

Council off-street car parks provide disabled bays for convenience, but East Suffolk states no parking concessions for Blue Badge holders — you pay the normal tariff. That covers popular coastal parks in Felixstowe, Southwold, Aldeburgh, Lowestoft and elsewhere.

West Suffolk, Babergh & Mid Suffolk

Rules differ by car park and on-street zone. Check the local tariff board; don't assume Ipswich-style free bays apply in Bury, Stowmarket or Sudbury.

Coast day-trip gotchas

  • Southwold Pier / Harbour: designated disabled bays exist; expect to pay in East Suffolk off-street parks unless a sign says otherwise.
  • Felixstowe prom:several Blue Badge bays near Spa / Martello / View Point — still confirm payment so you don't get a ticket.
  • Some East Suffolk parks offer a free 30-minute session if you register it — separate from Blue Badge rules. See our parking savings.

Apply or renew your Blue Badge

Suffolk County Council administers the scheme. Start via the national process / SCC Blue Badge pages — not the district parking desk.
